Pre-COVID, one of my favorite travel destinations was Western China, particularly the cities along the fabled Silk Road. This is a land of extremes: snow-capped mountains, vast deserts, tiny hamlets, & sprawling, dusty cities. Far from Beijing, Shanghai & other centers of modern Chinese culture, the West is little explored by foreign tourists. Perhaps this sense of isolation–and the feeling of discovery for which it allows–is one reason I was drawn back year after year.
In the future I hope to publish an account of Gansu, Qinghai & Xinjiang provinces, the people who live there & my travels among them. Until then, here are some pictures to give you an of idea of what I’ve seen. The pics are arranged by city.
If you’re interested in traveling in the Silk Road region & would like some advice, please feel free to contact me.
